Canoeing Gear

You don't need all this stuff, but if you didn't include luxuries on a gear list you would always have a short list.  The more necessary stuff is underlined.

A. Basic gear a Canoeing Scout should have

  • Closed toe sandals or water shoes - secure on feet

  • Swim suit - preferably with at least one pocket

  • Non-cotton shirt - unless the weather is super hot!

  • Hat - preferably that will cover your neck

  • Sunscreen

  • Insect repellent

  • Class III PFD (Lifejacket)

  • Whistle on a cord attached to PFD where it can be reached easily

B. Gear for the Boat

  • Bailer - made out of a cut plastic jug

  • Throw bag

  • Paddles - rule of thumb is should reach to chin when standing up

  • Bilge pump - now this is getting fancy

  • Gear loops attached to thwarts

  • Knee pads or foam attached to bottom of canoe

  • Spare paddle

  • Painters (buoyant lines 1/2" or thicker) attached to bow and stern

C. Tripping Gear for Overnighters

  • Dry Bags - one big one per person for clothes and stuff, one for the tent, and then as many others as necessary to carry general gear

  • Sealed plastic tubs or dry boxes (tubs are cheap to make)

  • Flotation bags - to take up empty space in the canoe

  • Roll-up table

  • Folding camp chairs

  • River toilet - most rivers require some form of camp toilet to pack out waste
